When your little one reaches 6 months of age, it’s time to start complementary feeding along with breast milk. At this stage, your baby begins to grow and develop rapidly, so providing balanced nutrition is extremely important.
Complementary feeding means introducing additional foods when breast milk alone is no longer enough to meet the baby’s nutritional needs after 6 months.
You should provide a balanced diet from the four essential food groups:
🌽 Grains: rice, wheat, corn
🍗 Protein: meat, fish
🫘 Legumes: various types of beans
🥦 Vegetables & fruits
While introducing complementary foods, you can continue breastfeeding as usual without stopping.
✔️ At 6 months:
You may feed soft mashed rice mixed with beans or fish twice a day.
✔️ From 7 to 9 months:
Feed about half of a small baby bowl of rice 3 times a day.
You can also introduce soft mashed vegetables such as carrots and sweet corn.
✔️ From 9 to 12 months:
Add meats, leafy greens, and potatoes along with rice.
Feed one small baby bowl 3 times a day.
At this stage, you can introduce fruits like mango, apple, banana, and papaya in finger-sized pieces so the baby can practice self-feeding.
✔️ After 1 year:
Your child can start eating the same meals as the family — regular rice and dishes.
Breast milk should be exclusively given for the first 6 months, and complementary foods should be introduced only after 6 months.
